Buzbee, Verona Hightower

Wife of Lovell Buzbee. Daughter of R.L. & Orman Hightower. Mother of Tracey, Kennon, & Karen. Known for her talent of playing the piano by ear. Lived in Waukeenah her entire life. Born, lived entire life & died in same home. Can you imagine what she accumulated? She attented school in Waukeenah thru the 8th grade and then graduated from Monticello High School. She played the piano for everyone. Was very musically talented and could play many instruments. In her younger years, she and several ladies (Mattie Lou Monroe Roberts, Gertrude Grantham) of Waukeenah formed a Minstral playing for the locals. She would also play for the local square dances in the old Waukeenah School building while Mr. Joe Cooksey would do the calling. She and her lifelong friend, Lila Brown McClellan, probably climbed every tree in Waukeenah. They were some ball players and “tomboys”. She worked for Southeastern Telephone Company, Department of Highway Safety, and retired from the Florida Department of Transportation. She loved to sit on the front porch and wave at the locals who passed on US 27. In the 1950’s she and her son, Kennon ,were known for playing and singing on WCTV , Lowell McCormick’s Gospel Hour, as well as many all night sings around. They were very good and performed for many funerals and church services. She loved to visit nursing homes to play for the residents. Member of WUMC and play her entire life there for services and events.
